Correction letters with a specific URL and a specific claim rank highest. Letters about a missed or wrong figure in one of our articles. Letters about a missing topic - for example, a reader asking for a state-by-state breakdown of a particular gaming rule. Letters to the desk are read in weekday batch order; off-peak letters can take up to five days.

What we don’t reply to

We don’t reply to partnership requests from companies we’ve never heard of. We don’t reply to SEO pitch emails. We don’t reply to asks for a backlink exchange. Those messages go to a separate folder; we don’t publish those replies in the mailbag.

We do not publish any letter verbatim without sender consent; we publish an anonymised summary when a letter leads to a correction.

What happens after you write

Most letters lead to a quick exchange in which the desk confirms or contests the claim. If we confirm, we update the corrections register within 14 days and reply with the corrected text. If we contest, we cite the verification log entry and explain our position. Either way, the desk keeps a record of the exchange in the verification log on the methodology page.

If your letter is well-formed and we can verify the claim, we will publish a correction within 14 days. If your letter is contested by our evidence, we will explain our position and offer to add your disagreement to the relevant page as a note. The desk treats every letter as a chance to improve the published copy.

The best letters cite a specific URL on the site, quote the specific claim that is wrong, and propose a verifiable correction with a source. Letters of that shape get replies within two business days. Letters that say 'your site is wrong' without specifying which article, which figure, or what the correct figure should be get a polite but slower reply.

What we don’t do with letters

We don’t sell, rent, share or trade letter contents with any third party. We don’t publish letters verbatim without consent. We don’t publish letters sent for any disputed or promotional purpose. Letters used in the corrections register are summarised and anonymised unless the sender has asked to be quoted.
